Atomcraft Toolbelt Upgrade
Extra toolbar rows so your Drill, Hand, and Wrench stop fighting for the same hotbar slot.

Atomcraft Toolbelt Upgrade Guide
The Toolbelt Upgrade expands the Toolbar — the row of tools along the side of your screen — so you can keep a Copper Drill, Hand, Blueprint, Crowbar, and specialty gear equipped at once without constant slot shuffling. It is easy to confuse with the Material Belt, which is a separate upgrade for material shortcuts at the bottom of the screen. This page explains the Toolbelt, the June 2026 QoL that ships with it, and how to lay out toolbar rows for digging, building, combat, and late-game toys.
Toolbelt vs Material Belt — know the difference
| Upgrade | What it expands | What lives there | Typical unlock metal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toolbelt | Toolbar rows (tools) | Drill, Hand, Hammer, Wrench, Nuke Launcher | Toolbelt research chain |
| Material Belt | Material bar rows | Charcoal, acids, alloys, conveyor pixels | Molybdenum |
The Toolbelt answers: “Which tool am I holding?” The Material Belt answers: “Which pixel am I placing?” Both can have multiple rows once unlocked, and both respond to the same scroll shortcuts — but they are independent upgrades with different layouts and mental models. If you only remember one thing from this page, remember that distinction before you spend ore on the wrong research node.
What the Toolbelt Upgrade adds
Before the Toolbelt, Atomcraft forces painful tool triage. You swap Drill for Hand for Blueprint for Crowbar every time you pivot from mining to stamping to teardown. The Toolbelt Upgrade grants additional toolbar rows so each row becomes a dedicated loadout — row 1 for digging, row 2 for building, row 3 for combat or demolition, row 4 for specialty automation tools.
Switch rows with Ctrl + Mousewheel (and Ctrl + Shift + Mousewheel for the opposite direction). If you also own the Material Belt, those same shortcuts cycle material bar rows when your cursor is over the material strip — one muscle memory for both belts. Full binding context lives in Controls Hotkeys.
Watch: tools and beginner workflow
Suggested toolbar row layouts
Treat each row like a job kit. You do not need these exact orders, but separating dig from build from combat prevents the classic mistake of nuking a forge because your Drill row still had the Nuke Launcher selected.
- Dig row: Plastic or Copper Drill, upgraded tiers as you earn them, Pipette for samples
- Build row: Hand, Blueprint tool, Hammer for stamps and placement
- Teardown row: Crowbar, Blender for mixing, Laser for precision cuts
- Specialty row: Wrench for batch filters and sensors, Freeze Ray, Nuke Launcher, other late-game gear
Keep your most-used row on the default scroll position. Many players leave Dig as row 1 and Build as row 2 so surface gathering and base expansion never require a full inventory audit. When automation projects start, promote the Wrench row instead of deleting your drill setup.
June 2026 QoL bundled with belts
The Toolbelt arrived in the same update window as several interface improvements that matter even if you only own one belt upgrade:
Ctrl + scroll row switching
Ctrl + Mousewheel and Ctrl + Shift + Mousewheel change toolbar rows when you have the Toolbelt, and material bar rows when you have the Material Belt. Learn both directions early — underground, it is faster than opening inventory to hunt for a tool.
Middle-mouse material picking
Middle-click QoL was tightened around the same patch cycle:
- Hover a static buildable (a placed structure you want to extend or match) and middle-click — Atomcraft selects the material that builds into it.
- If that fails, it falls back to the material under your Drill target.
- A color swatch animates into the matching inventory slot so you see which shortcut received the material.
This pairs beautifully with Material Tracking workflows on the material side while your Toolbelt rows stay focused on tools, not chemistry.
Brush and width settings persist
Hand, Blender, and Laser brush sizes (and Laser width) now save and restore between sessions. Combined with Hammer, Crowbar, and Wrench setting persistence from the same era, you can configure a build row once and return days later without resizing brushes from scratch.
M jumps to Map
Press M to jump straight to the Map tab — useful when you are deep in a dig row and need to confirm biome borders or a teleporter pin without digging through menu layers. See How to Play for broader UI navigation.
When to unlock the Toolbelt
Prioritize the Toolbelt once you regularly alternate between mining, Hand placement, and Hammer stamps in the same session — typically mid Copper or early Iron when your single toolbar row feels like a bottleneck. The Material Belt can wait until acid and alloy juggling hurts more than tool swapping, since it requires Molybdenum and targets mid-game chemistry instead of tool variety.
New players should skim the Tool Overview first, then return here when slot friction becomes the limiting factor.
Pairing Toolbelt rows with the Wrench
The Wrench deserves its own toolbar row once mechanical pixels appear. Batch filter and sensor work interrupts digging flow if the Wrench shares a row with your Drill. Dedicate row 4 (or your last row) to configuration tools and panic buttons — Freeze Ray for fire control, Nuke Launcher only when you mean it.
Common Toolbelt mistakes
- Confusing belts — scrolling material rows when you meant tool rows (check cursor position over the material bar).
- Combat tools on dig row — one mis-click with specialty gear destroys hours of forge layout.
- Forgetting persisted brush sizes — re-tuning Hand width every session is no longer necessary; verify settings once per project.
- Ignoring middle-click pick — manually hunting a recipe material when hovering the buildable would have filled the slot.
- Single-row fallback — after unlocking the Toolbelt, still manually swapping tools in inventory instead of assigning rows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers tied to this page.
What is the difference between the Toolbelt and Material Belt in Atomcraft?
The Toolbelt adds rows to the Toolbar for tools (Drill, Hand, Wrench, etc.). The Material Belt adds rows to the bottom material bar for pixel shortcuts. They are separate upgrades.
How do I switch toolbar rows with the Toolbelt?
Use Ctrl + Mousewheel and Ctrl + Shift + Mousewheel to cycle toolbar rows. The same shortcuts cycle material bar rows if you own the Material Belt and scroll over that strip.
What does middle-click do after the June 2026 QoL updates?
Hover a static buildable and middle-click to select the material that builds into it, with fallback to your drill target. A swatch animates into the matching inventory slot.
Do Hand, Blender, and Laser brush sizes save?
Yes. Brush sizes and Laser width persist between sessions alongside Hammer, Crowbar, and Wrench settings from the same update window.
When should I unlock the Toolbelt versus the Material Belt?
Unlock the Toolbelt when tool swapping slows you down — usually mid Copper. Unlock the Material Belt later when juggling many materials, after you can access Molybdenum.
